Abram’s mother was a British gargoyle named Winter, who was born on the isle of Avalon. She adopted a protectorate in Landis, England, and became an avid user of a phone meeting system that was the predecessor to today’s Internet. Her loneliness led her to her mate and husband. The father, Randall Smith, was a Jewish widower from Commack, New York, who also turned to the Internet in search of a second love. These two souls found each other in the electric world, and Smith was so taken by her words and deeds that he flew (took a jet) to England to search for her. When he discovered that his new love was a gargoyle, it didn’t deter him from proposing to Winter. The two decided to head back to Long Island, after Winter found a suitable successor to protect her village.
Abram was hatched three years later, and had a good, yet sheltered early life. Unfortunately, Winter was smashed in a hate crime aimed toward Smith, and the half-breed began to hide what he truly was. He made it through high school without anyone actually knowing that he was part-gargoyle, and endured stories of how his mother’s kind would eat little children and rape people. He went to Armlieh College in the Southern Tier of New York, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and English. He also worked as a radio announcer for WACW, the college radio station and as a baker for the school’s coffeehouse. Incidentally, Abram gave an outstanding performance as a demon in the school’s dramatic production of Dr. Faustus.
At his college graduation he actually glided down from a roof to accept his diploma, much to the administration’s chagrin! The event was covered up and Abram was allowed to keep his degree, provided that he bore to affiliation with his alma mater. The whole story about Armlieh College graduating a gargoyle’s son was neatly covered up, and no one has spoke about it since.
The half-breed still keeps in frequent contact with his father and has
adopted the last name of “Wintersmith” to mourn and honor his mother.
He has had trouble finding his niche in life, but that doesn’t stop him
from having fun and making friends, no matter what species (or combination)
they are. Has a nose for business and has a vast understanding of
legends and myths. He knows of the “Gargoyle Way”, of protecting
and caring about those you hold dear, but sometimes falls short
of his own expectations.
Abram currently works at Halsay’s Furniture Depot on Staten Island, where he uses his strength to move merchandise. He is trying to move up the corporate ladder, but has been greeted with glares and jealous superiors. There have been times where the half-breed wanted to show his wings to such narrow-minded people, and give them a good scare, but usually tolerates such abuse. He would rather make it on his own talent and abilities rather than intimidate people and risk getting fired, or worse yet, turned into a science experiment.
Abram has discovered other kindred spirits, including the now-famous Manhattan Clan, whom he has loose ties with. He knows of other clans throughout the world and is trying to keep in touch with several of them. He has made friendships with a number of humans, gargoyles, and hybrids, including Beth Maza, Ninane, Kanthara, Siryn, Lysander, Broadway, and Hope, to name a few. In fact, the half-breed is teaching the human Beth Maza Modernist magic, as well as the hyena-headed SpotWeld.
Abram is normally very cheerful, but somewhat guarded about his true form. He's nervous when meeting new people, but warms up quickly to those who befriend him. Abram would rather make peace with those who are hostile with him rather to engage in a fight, but is more than capable in a fight. He is given to severe bouts of depression every now and then, but usually greets the morning as a new male. It is very rare to see Abram depressed for more than a day, but prolonged periods of depression usually lead him to contemplate suicide, an idea which he abhors.
Abram is an excellent actor, able to fit into human and gargoyle society very easily. He can usually fit himself into any situation, from being a corporate suit to a lowly mail worker. In addition, Abram is an avid student of Modernism and has attained the title of Paragon. He can teach others this new arcane art and has apprentices in the form of Beth Maza and SpotWeld.
Sleep Detail: Abram is able to stay active during the day, but because
of his gargoyle parentage, he must stonesleep for at least two hours each
daylight period. He also needs to supplement this with four hours of conventional
human sleep. If he becomes exhausted, he will turn to stone and stay
that way until the sun sets. He usually stonesleeps between 1 and
3 in the afternoon. As with any gargoyle, Abram is very vulnerable
in this state, and can be destroyed as easily as a stone statue.
Diet: Eats about as much as a human male with a strong build.
Is particularly fond of apples, pears, and other fruits.
Body Detail: Five-fingered hands with fingernails that can grow into claws if left untrimmed. Feet are very much like a gargoyle’s talons, but heel is about 1.5 to 2 inches off ground as opposed to the normal 4 to 5 inches of purebloods. Is able to walk like a human for long periods of time and can fit into large-size human shoes with effort (hurts the feet) prefers to wear sport sandals, so he can use his talons for climbing. Wings, when fully unfolded extend to six inches above head and eight inches below the waist. Can either cloak wings or fold them close to body on shoulders, allowing him to fit into human society easily (MUST wear a jacket or long shirt to do this!). Four small bumps (horns) high on forehead are easily hidden by the hair, but show up when hair is wet. Ears are slightly pointed, and usually has hair combed over them. Unlike most gargoyle mixed breeds, Abram does not have a tail, and this fact doesn’t hinder him in any way.
Typical Clothing: When posing as a human being, Abram dresses like a typical twenty-something. He always wears a long, heavy shirt to hide his wings, and wears a jacket to further insure himself, unless the wheather is very warm. Any type of closed-toe shoes complete his disguise. If he is with friends that know of his true nature, Abram will usually wear grey sweatpants and a lighter shirt, with wing-holes cut out. Sports sandals are also worn so he may use his talons in climbing. He will still wear a jacket to hide the wings if needed, but prefers to keep his wings unfolded.
