Bolt, also known as Mer, is a Wyrm, a classification of Dragons in the age group of 1000-1200 years of age. In 938 AD, his parents, the dragons known as Thunder and Storm, left him in the gargoyle rookery at Castle Wyvern to keep him safe when they entered a conflict known as the Great Dragon Wars. Two months later, he hatched with the rest of the gargoyles eggs in that rookery. He grew up alongside of Goliath, Demona and their rookery siblings and grew to be a close friend to Goliath.
During the Viking attacks on Castle Wyvern in 994 AD, he flew over Goliath and Hudson to cover them in their search for the Vikings. At Goliath's request, he rushed back to defend the castle at sunrise, but was taken out of the sky by Viking archers. He crashed into the cliff face where Demona was in stone sleep, and was rendered unconscious for a week. Demona tended to him, told him of the tragedy at Wyvern and the 6 clan members in stone sleep until "the castle rose above the clouds." She continued to tend his wounds for 5 weeks, and then she left.
Bolt swore to find a way to free the ensorcelled members of his clan, and also swore to prevent any beings save gargoyles from taking up residence in Wyvern. He also journeyed far and wide to find a way to break the spell, always returning to Castle Wyvern to guard the clan. He never succeeded in finding a way to free his clan.
In 1100 AD, during a period of rest, he had dreams which made him restless, with images of the clan and visions of Angela. Angela's image began appearing to him frequently, which made him realize that she was his predestined love. He painted a picture of Angela, and then left for 22 years to try to find her, without success, in the hopes that she could perhaps help his sleeping clan. During his journey, among other things, he learned of Demona and MacBeth. The clan was protected, in the meantime, by a human named Tabby that owed Bolt a favor.
He was drafted into the British military in both World Wars. In the second World War, he assumed the identity of John MacDonnell, and flew many missions against the Nazi planes bombing London during the Blitz of 1940, eventually rising to the rank of captain. One of his more famous foes was the person known as Wagner von Schloss and his night-fighter unit, the Jagdstafel 200. He held no grudge against him, however- he and Wagner exchanged stories about their lives some time later in a Scottish pub.
Years later, in 1994, David Xanatos moved Castle Wyvern to New York City, and Bolt happily found that it would be placed atop the Eyrie Building, putting the castle above the clouds and freeing his clan.
Eight months later, he journeyed to New York City, which was his first trip to the United States. He arrived on the day before the night the clan was freed from its stone sleep, and checked into a nearby hotel. That night, Bolt left to meet his clan, and wound up as a participant in their battle with the mercenaries who were later revealed to be Xanatos Corporate Guardsmen. After helping to defeat the XCG and telling the clan of his life after the Castle Wyvern massacre, Bolt left to enter a one to two year regenerative sleep.
Bolt returned to Scotland, where he rested. Some time later, he was met by the Avalon travelers, Goliath, Elisa Maza, Angela, and Bronx. During their visit there, Bolt and the Avalon travelers battled and defeated the evil dragon Firestorm. There was an mutual attraction between Bolt and Angela, possibly helped by the fact that Bolt assumed the form of a gargoyle during much of the travelers' stay. However, Bolt tried to gently end the possibility of a relationship between them, because they were truly very different, Bolt being an ancient dragon, and Angela being a beautiful young gargoyle. He left the travelers for parts unknown.
Bolt traveled across the world, and saw many things. Along the way, he meet a small clan of three female gargoyles named Tiffany, Renee and Velvet, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Bolt told them of the Manhattan Clan, which prompted them to begin searching for them on the Internet. He met Demona in Canada, and found that she had created a clone of him called Ash. He took Ash, and traveled with him, eventually stopping in Manhattan to rejoin Goliath's clan. After the incident involving Thailog, Demona, and the Clone Clan, during which Bolt was forced to battle and defeat Ash, Bolt allowed his feelings for Angela to be revealed, and with Goliath's permission (as long as he was in the form of a gargoyle), became Angela's mate. He also told the Trio of Clan Fond du Lac.
Bolt left to bring Clan Fond du Lac to Manhattan, but when he returned, the clock tower had been destroyed by the Hunters, which convinced him that Angela had been slain. He was pleasantly surprised the next day when it turned out that the clan had moved into Castle Wyvern. He took the Fond du Lac clan to meet the Trio, and was reunited with Angela. He presented her with the Medallion of Transmutation, an object he created which allowed one to change into a different species. They spent the next day as humans.
Soon after, the Demon War occured. The Manhattan Clan teamed up with Saburo Nishikawa, better known as the Guyver, to battle a horde of demons as well as the man known as Dragon's Bane, who was there to hunt down and kill Bolt. Angela and Bolt had some relationship troubles during this time, but they worked them out.
In the near future, Bolt and Angela will have a son, who will be eventually named "3-G."
Mer is one hundred and 75 feet long, with a wingspan of the same length. His weight is estimated around 13 1/2 tons. His coloring is midnight-blue. He is very adept at flying and aerial combat. He is also immune to all electrical attacks, including weapons using an electrical power source. He has a "breath weapon," which is not flame, as it is with the typical dragon, but a bolt of lightning 5 feet wide and 100 feet long. He can use this "breath weapon" 3 times a day. He can also imitate sounds at will, and possesses a high resistance to magic (95%). He can also create or destroy water 3 times a day. He can summon an elemental being known as a Dust Devil, use the skill of ventriloquism, and control winds once a day. Most dragons can cast a number of other spells, but the creation of the Medallion of Transmutation removed that ability.
