Carlos Maza was the father of Peter Maza, and the grandfather of Elisa, Derek, and Beth Maza. A Native American (presumably of the Hopi tribe), Carlos lived on a reservation in Arizona. In 1960, after a fight, his son Peter left to live on his own, away from Carlos's traditional ways.
The two never truly reconciled, and were still apart when Carlos died. Peter thereafter regretted all the time they'd spent apart, angry at one another. He finally made peace with the memory of his father in 1996, after Coyote the Trickster helped him re-embrace his heritage.
Carlos Maza was apparently a normal human with no special abilities.
