Claw was one of the four humans transformed into mutates by Dr. Anton Sevarius of Gen-U-Tech. His mutation resulted in a mental trauma, rendering him mute. Next to Maggie Reed, he is the mutate who wants his transformation reversed the most. He basically followed along with the other mutates, becoming the target of mean-spirited jokes and subordinate to fellow mutate Fang.

When the mutates moved to the Labyrinth, Claw went with them, and became a reluctant member of Fang's "gang." He eventually rebelled against Fang when he tried to take over the Labyrinth, first freeing an imprisoned Maggie, and then refusing to help Fang when the Manhattan clan fought him.

At present, Claw is still living in the Labyrinth, protecting the people who reside there.

Claw has all the abilities of the mutates- superhuman strength and gliding ability like a gargoyle, and the ability to generate electrical energy in blasts. This came from the DNA of jungle cats, bats, and electrical eels, combined with his own human DNA. The eel DNA was necessary to provide the energy needed to support a creature like a gargoyle.
