Kai is the leader of the gargoyle clan in Ishimura, Japan. His second-in-command was Yama. When Taro was younger, Kai attempted to train him in the ways of Bushido, the way of the warrior, but Taro, in his own words, was a poor student.

In 1996, Kai met the Avalon travelers, Goliath, Elisa Maza, Angela, and Bronx. The three gargoyles, along with his clan and himself, were taken to a theme park based on gargoyles by Taro during the day. Taro said he intended for Kai and his clan to teach the children of the world Bushido by revealing themselves to the world a few at a time, but Kai decided that it would not be in the best interests of his clan to do so. Taro responded by hitting him with a tranquilizer dart. By the time Kai awoke, Yama had defeated Taro, and Kai led his clan back to Ishimura, where they still live to the present.

Kai possesses all the normal abilities and traits of gargoyles, including wings that enable him to glide, claws, talons, a prehensile tail, and eyes that glow white when he is enraged, as well as strength far greater than that of the average human. During the day, he enters a regenerative "stone sleep," during which he turns into an organic stone-like substance and heals at a faster rate.
