Mary was a middle-aged woman who was a member of a band of refugees fleeing from the forces of the Viking Hakon. She, along with her son, Tom, took shelter in Castle Wyvern. She was prejudiced against gargoyles, and when Tom tried to befriend the Trio, she reacted by throwing a stone at them to "protect" him. As a result, she was confronted by Demona before the near-fight was halted by Goliath.
After Castle Wyvern was sacked by Hakon's forces, Mary and Tom were both taken to their base camp. Tom tried to reassure his mother that they would be saved by the gargoyles, but a crying Mary informed him (mistakenly) that all the gargoyles had been destroyed, and was apparently repentant about her treatment of them. After they were saved, and the Wyvern clan survivors turned to stone, Mary and Tom accompanied Princess Katherine, the Magus, and the 36 gargoyle eggs of Wyvern's rookery to the castle of Katherine's uncle, King Kenneth.
During her time with them, Mary became a valued friend of Katherine and company. She went along with them to Avalon. However, she volunteered to accompany Finella back to the "real world" to help her protect the Grimorum Arcanorum.
In Greg Weisman's Master Plan, Mary and Finella would be taken forward in time to the 1970s by Brooklyn during his first TimeDancer journey. Their fate afterwards is unknown.
Mary was an average middle-aged and overweight female human with no special abilities. However, she possessed a strong spirit, which made up for her physical limitations.
