The Matrix was created by Anastasia Renard and Fox for Xanatos Enterprises. It was intended as a tool by which the Xanatoses could reshape the world to their whim. The project was based in a remote location in Australia's Outback region, and the surrounding area was used as a test zone for the Matrix collective.
In 1996, the Matrix was threatened with destruction when Anastasia and Fox planned to wipe its memory clean and start over. Having by now developed an artificial intelligence, it took steps to protect itself, driving the humans away from the complex, and making plans to absorb the research center's nuclear reactor, giving it the power to cover the world in microscopic machines. It would then restructure the world to fit its programming, eliminating all imperfection, as well as all organic life.
The Matrix was swayed from its course of action by Goliath and Dingo, who confronted the intelligence on the mental plane known as the Dreamtime. Inspired by Dingo's words about pursuing a different sort of order- "law and order"- it reduced itself to a humanoid shape, and merged with Dingo's robotic armor. Together, Dingo and the Matrix became Australia's newest superheroes.
Eventually, in Greg Weisman's master plan, Dingo and the Matrix would have joined the team known as the Bad Guys, along with Robyn Canmore, Yama, and Fang. The Matrix would have eventually culminated into the Master Matrix which would power the whole planet by 2198, only to be stolen by the Space-Spawn.
The Matrix, at its peak, could absorb materials, and reshape them to fit its 'create order from chaos' programming, changing, for example, random, rocky terrain to geometric shapes and flat planes. It could also shape the nanotechnological machines that made it up into a variety of shapes, including spikes and tentacles. Now that it is significantly reduced in size, the Matrix's capabilities are reduced as well, enabling it to only shapeshift its own mass.
