Matthew Bluestone was raised in Manhattan, and frequented Mr. Jaffe's shop as a child. When he grew to adulthood, he joined the FBI, and was partnered with Martin Hacker. However, Matt's relentless quest to uncover the Illuminati Society, a secret organization he believed ran everything from behind the scenes, eventually cost him his job.
Fired from the Bureau, Matt joined the 23rd Precinct of the NYPD as a detective. He helped Maria Chavez catch Tony Dracon after Elisa Maza had been shot- following her recovery, Matt was assigned to be her partner. While Elisa resented being "saddled" with a partner, Matt didn't seem to have any problems with it. Their first case was to investigate mysterious gargoyle sightings and robberies- while Elisa managed to convince the public that they were the Steel Clan, Matt, having seen the real gargoyles fighting the robots, was sure there was something more to it than that. He became determined to learn the truth.
One night, in the dead of winter in early 1995, Matt visited his old friend, Mr. Jaffe, who had been robbed many times of late. They didn't get to talk long, before Matt and Elisa were called to Times Square to deal with Coldstone. Despite Goliath and the Trio battling the cyborg in plain view, Matt was only confused by the whole incident.
Later in the year, Matt was trained to test out R.E.C.A.P., a robotic drone designed to be sent in place of officers into hazardous situations, operated using virtual reality. His first run using the robot ended in its destruction at the hands of Coldstone. When the virtual reality equipment was stolen, Matt was determined that it would lead them to the creature, and followed it using a tracking device. Matt almost found them, but was delayed by Elisa and the Manhattan clan long enough for the Goliath and Lexington to use it and leave the device behind. Bluestone was perplexed to discover the stolen equipment with nothing but a rat near it.
Matt Bluestone received a tempting lead on the Illuminati Society a few weeks later from Martin Hacker, one that led him to try to track down 1920s crime boss "Mace" Malone. His trail led him to G.F. Benton, C.P.A., who'd set up shop in "Mace" Malone's old office. Clues in Benton's office led Matt to the abandoned Silver Falcon restaurant. There, he was ambushed and captured by Tony Dracon and his men, who were conducting a similar search. In trying to locate Matt, Elisa was likewise captured, but the pair were freed thanks to the behind-the-scenes assistance of Broadway.
After that incident, Matt decided it was a bad idea to keep Elisa in the dark, but he soon began to suspect she had secrets of her own. He discovered the living space in the clock tower where the gargoyles lived, and Elisa narrowly covered her tracks by telling him it was her secret hideaway, getting him out of there before sunset. At the same time, Matt got new information from Hacker, that eventually allowed him to track down "Mace" Malone as he left a flower at the grave of his ex-wife, Flora Dreidel. Malone, caught, revealed that the Illuminati had been observing Matt's efforts for some time, and were impressed by his tenacity. Mace offered him membership, and sweetened the deal by telling him a secret- Elisa's involvement with the gargoyles.
Matt felt hurt and betrayed, and put his and Elisa's life in danger in an angry attempt to get the gargoyles' attention. Maza barely stopped him in time before he killed them both. Bluestone briefly believed the Illuminati had tricked him, until Elisa finally, to his amazement, admitted "they don't follow me everywhere I go." Elisa tried to drive him to the clock tower so he could meet them, but they didn't get back to the station until after sunrise. Matt was suspicious that her claim of having to wait until sunset was a dodge, but spent the day speaking with Malone. He informed Matt of the Society's demand for his induction- to bring a gargoyle to their base in the Hotel Cabal.
The detective was introduced to the gargoyles the following evening, and Matt told Goliath about the Illuminati's demand. Together, they concocted a plan. Matt gave Goliath the key Malone had given him to enter the Hotel with, and the two were separated after gaining entrance. While Goliath was sent through a maze of mind-bending death-traps, Matt played along with "Mace," up until Goliath began using the key as it was intended- as a means of safe passage through the Hotel Cabal. Determined to prevent Goliath's escape, Malone tried to kill Goliath, but Matt stopped him. Matt and Goliath left, with "Mace" Malone trapped inside his own giant torture chamber.
While he had earned the friendship and trust of the clan, Matt thought it had cost him his one chance to enter the Illuminati. However, he was proven wrong when Martin Hacker- who had been an Illuminatus the entire time- gave Matt his membership pin. Matt was infuriated, but Martin Hacker defused it by telling him that he had really impressed the Society. As for "Mace" Malone, Hacker said it wasn't Matt's fault that the former gangster couldn't hold Goliath. (Whether they knew Matt was the main reason Goliath escaped is uncertain.) Thus, Matt now had the inside line he'd wanted to reveal the Illuminati Society to the world.
Having found the Illuminati Society, Matt now resumed regular police work- with a little gargoyles time on the side. He went undercover as a worker in Mr. Jaffe's grocery store to expose Tony Dracon's protection racket, and was instrumental in Dracon's capture. When Elisa disappeared on the Avalon World Tour, Broadway came to Matt seeing if he could figure out where she'd gone. Matt, however, had no idea. Without Elisa there, Matt became the Manhattan Clan's primary human support, presumably taking over Elisa's role in those months.
After Elisa's return, it was back to normal- or as normal as ever- with Matt. He was involved in breaking up the gang war between Tomas Brod and Tony Dracon, and also helped Elisa in her undercover assignment to catch three thugs plaguing a subway station.
Soon after the latter incident, however, Maria Chavez temporarily broke up Elisa and Matt's partnership. While she kept Matt on night shift, she placed Elisa on day shift, to help train Jason Conover, a new recruit. When samples of the chemical disinfectant DI/7 were stolen by a group of thieves, Matt questioned the owner of the company that made the disinfectant- David Xanatos. While he didn't trust Xanatos, he was unable to prove any connection between Xanatos and the robbery attempt, and left empty-handed.
Soon after this, Jason Conover and his siblings attacked the clock tower above the 23rd Precinct house, and revealed the Manhattan Clan's presence to the world. Matt and Elisa discovered the truth about Jason and his siblings, that they were part of the Canmore family. Matt Bluestone found himself placed in charge of the Gargoyle Task Force, a special unit of the NYPD intended to deal with the new gargoyle 'crisis.' Despite his discomfort with this assignment, Matt was able to put his position to good use, preventing police involvement in the Manhattan Clan's battle with the Canmores in St. Damien's Cathedral. He also made sure that lethal force would not be used against the Clan. Matt also became a sort of representative for gargoyle public relations, attempting to keep the city calm about the gargoyles.
In the Goliath Chronicles, Matt continued in both his job as head of the Gargoyle Task Force, and his job as Elisa's partner. He helped investigate the kidnapping of Alexander Fox Xanatos, but was also forced to intervene when the Illuminati tried to use Goliath to kill Latvonian President Egon Pax. The latter case resulted in a distinct downturn in public opinion towards gargoyles. He also helped Elisa investigate events that soon turned out to be connected to Proteus. When the clan was seemingly destroyed by the Quarrymen, Matt was there to comfort a grieving Elisa.
In Puck's nightmare future world, Matt Bluestone was a member of the resistance against "Xanatos." He was slain attacking the Eyrie Pyramid in the assault following Goliath's "return" to Manhattan.
Matt Bluestone was a skilled detective, and an able combatant thanks to his FBI training. His main weakness was his obsession with finding and revealing the Illuminati Society, an obsession which lost him his first job and threatened his life on occasion.
