Nokkar is an eons-old alien being, who landed on Earth in ancient times to create an outpost in an intergalactic war. He befriended the natives of the island where he landed- an island called Rapa Nui to the natives, but generally referred to as Easter Island in modern times. He swore to protect them, and did so with vigilance. In his honor, the natives created the Moai statues.
By 1996, however, Nokkar was beginning to question his purpose on Earth, and even considered abandoning his post. This all changed when the Avalon travelers landed on the island. Convinced that the gargoyles were scouts of his peoples' enemy, the Space-Spawn, and that Elisa Maza was their prisoner, he 'rescued' her from Bronx. When the detective tried to convince Nokkar of the goodness of the gargoyles, he decided that she was brainwashed, and subjected her to a mind-cleansing process designed to remove the 'aliens'' tampering. A side-effect of this process was the wiping of all her memories, leaving only her general knowledge intact. He released her in this amnesiac state.
Elisa wandered until she was picked up by the archaeologists Lydia Duane and Peter Morwood-Smyth. They took her to a friend, Dr. Arnada, who assessed her condition, and made plans to send Elisa to his brother in Hawaii, a specialist in her condition. Before that could happen, however, she was picked up by Goliath, despite the fact that she did not remember him. Elisa pulled her gun on Goliath, and would have shot him dead if she had not been out of bullets.
In the meantime, Nokkar had captured Bronx and Angela.
Using a holographic projection of Angela and some sort of gelantinous capture
device, Nokkar captured Goliath and 'freed' Elisa. He showed her around
his ship, and explained what he thought the situation was. Elisa now believed
that Goliath and the others were attempting to 'regain control of her mind.'
But
when Nokkar made to kill them, albeit painlessly, the detective intervened
by instinct, freeing the gargoyles. Goliath engaged Nokkar one-on-one while
Angela, Bronx, and Elisa escaped. Goliath seemingly defeated the alien,
but he rose his ship- hidden beneath a moai-covered hill- to the surface
when Goliath got there. He made to use heavier weaponry, but Elisa stood
with the gargoyles, telling Nokkar of her (to herself) unreasonable conviction
that the gargoyles could be trusted. Nokkar relented, citing the fact that
the brain-cleansing process only destroys false memories, and that the
loyalty she felt returning must be genuine.
Nokkar and the gargoyles came to an understanding, but Nokkar professed that he was now doomed to a solitary existence as a lone sentinel. It was then that Duane, Morwood-Smyth, and Arnada drove up, following Elisa. Elisa introduced them, and the four became allies and friends. Nokkar was no longer alone.
In Greg Weisman's Master Plan, Nokkar's technology would have been so far behind, that when the Space-Spawn actually invaded in 2198, he would be unprepared. He'd later join Samson's Resistance, and take Demona, Zafiro, Nicholas Natsilane Maza, and LXM-1057 into space to hit the Space-Spawn where they live.
Nokkar is a powerful being, possessing superhuman strength and durability. He is also extremely long-lived, and possesses a formidable arsenal of alien technology.
