Thailog may look like Goliath, the noble leader of the gargoyles, but he most assuredly does not act like him. He is a clone, created by David Xanatos and Anton Sevarius for unknown reasons.
Thailog was conceived when a Steel Clan robot was activated by Xanatos for the specific purpose of opening wounds in Goliath's skin. Goliath destroyed the robot as Elisa looked on, but not before it scratched bloody lines down his chest. Owen Burnett showed up right on cue, and treated the wound, and in doing so, extracted blood samples, complete with DNA. He told Goliath and Elisa that the robot had activated due to a freak overload in it's power matrix. They believed the lie, and the incident was forgotten.
Over the next 19 weeks, Thailog was grown in Sevarius's lab. His maturation process was accelerated, so he was essentially a newborn in an adult's body. He was also subliminally educated with Xanatos's unique 'slant' on things, which included a well-developed business sense, a very keen and cunning mind, and a willingness do to anything for profit and to fulfill his desires.
When Thailog was released, fully grown, he apparently did not hold well with the fact that he was grown to be a laboratory specimen, or whatever Xanatos had planned. He wanted to get out into the world and have the resources to do something with himself. He also wanted to see what his 'father' Goliath was like. Using all his skill coming from his other 'father' Xanatos, he concocted an ingenious plan.
He began by making an anonymous call to Elisa Maza, whom he knew presumably had contact with Goliath though Xanatos's files. Telling her he was going to blow up the offshore oil rig at Black Rock Point, he convinced her and Broadway and Lexington to investigate. He then assaulted them, and they, thinking he was Goliath, confronted Goliath about it later at the clocktower. Goliath was mystified as to the nature of the attacker, and grew interested, which was Thailog's plan all along.
Thailog then faked an e-mail to Sevarius, telling him to hire a mercenary team to kidnap Thailog as a statue during the day and then bring him to an offshore oil rig of Black Rock Point. Sevarius was fooled, thinking the e-mail to be from Xanatos, and assuming it was just some Machiavellian scheme. He did so, and the mystified Xanatos was angry over who could have kidnapped his prize specimen.
Thailog broke out of his confinement after the helicopter carrying him landed, and presumably, Sevarius shot him with a tranquillizer dart, locking him up in an pressurized room. Sevarius, then, according to the email, placed a call to Xanatos disguising his voice. It stated that Xanatos should come alone to the offshore oil rig alone carrying 20 million dollars in cash. At the same time, Owen came up with the information that Xanatos Enterprises owned the oil rig, and since Xanatos knew nothing about it, he assumed, falsley, that Sevarius had mastered the deed. He was understandably angered.
Xanatos arrived with the money at the oil rig at the same time Goliath and Elisa did. Goliath and Elisa were investigating where they had seen Thailog the previous night, and they left watching Xanatos to look inside the rig, finding Thailog locked in shackles. Thailog was unimpressed with Goliath's behavior toward him and decided to make him pay as well. He gassed Goliath, which weakened him, and locked him and Elisa in the room, before heading off to see what his other father's were up too.
Xanatos had meanwhile found Sevarius and had been amazed at the man's seeming ignorance of his fate. They both deduced at the same time that Thailog had been the one setting them both up, and right on cue Thailog showed up, subduing Xanatos's armor with a magnetic disk, shorting it out. He then subdued Sevarius and placed them both in the same room as Goliath and Elisa. Xanatos appealed to Thailog's business sense, thinking they could come to an arrangement, but Thailog blew him off, saying maybe on Xanatos's terms, but not his. Goliath pleaded with him to abandon his hunger for profit and join the clan, to which Thailog laughed, saying he had no use for protecting a city infested with inferior humans. He planned to destroy all of his 'fathers' in a blaze of glory, setting the oil tanker ablaze and leaving him with 20 million dollars to see his dreams through. He then left them to die.
The group managed to escape by using the disk that shorted out Xanatos's armor to electrify and jumpstart Goliath's strength. They all sent to the boat, and Goliath came back to try and convince Thailog one last time. Thailog responded by trying to fight him, and in the ensuing struggle, a flare gun Thailog was carrying fired, setting the entire rig ablaze. Goliath was blown off the rig in an explosion, unable to reach Thailog, and he presumed him dead, to his sorrow.
Later that week, it occured to Xanatos that if HE had been in that same position, he would've come up with a contingency plan, which meant, Thailog may have faked his own death, and gotten away clean with 20 million dollars of his money.
This turned out to be the case, as weeks later, Goliath and the company from Avalon showed up in Paris. They found that Thailog had apparently taken Demona as his mate, after she arrived there from Avalon. They scammed MacBeth into marrying Dominique Destine, so they could then capture him, and declare him legally dead. Thus, they would inherit all of his money. They also formed the company Nightstone Unlimited with Thailog's 20 million and Demona's wealth she'd hoarded. Thailog was greedy for more, and ultimately, Demona meant nothing to him. He released MacBeth secretly and hoped that Demona and MacBeth would destroy each other, leaving him with MacBeth AND Demona's wealth all to himself. He was stopped by Goliath and company, and ended up whisking Demona away at the last minute after she had gotten her first glimpse of Angela.
Weeks later, Thailog again appeared, scheming with Sevarius and Demona to create their own clan. They did this by letting Demona get captured by the clan and being imprisoned in the Labyrinth. Releasing tiny robotic mosquitos from her belt clasp, she extracted DNA from each of the gargoyles, which were then flown to Sevarius's laboratory to be grown into clones of the gargoyles. The clones were Neanderthal-like in their intelligence, and grossly malformed and colored differently than the gargoyles. Thailog then rescued Demona, and took Fang along with them. The gargoyles followed and were ambushed at Coney Island Amusement Park by the clones, and chained up. Thailog was about to slay them all, starting with Angela, but Demona stopped him, her love for her fully revealed. Preparing for this weakness in Demona, and still caring nothing for her beyond what she could do for him, Thailog revealed that he had created Delilah, a hybrid clone of Demona and Elisa Maza. She would give him the loyalty that Demona did not have. In a rage, and fear for her daughter, Demona released the gargoyles, and a fight ensued, eventually going into the roller coaster. It was set ablaze in the fight, and a struggling Thailog and Demona apparently perished in the blaze. Demona did not die, as she was immortal, but Thailog's fate was uncertain.
In the Goliath Chronicles, Thailog did resurface, seemingly unscathed by the fire. It is unknown how he survived. He was in great pain however, because of his clone nature, he was succumbing to a degenerative disease, as were the other clones. After scheming to get the antidote for himself and failing, he and the rest apparently perished or were put into a coma of some sort, exactly which is unknown. They turned to stone, and he and the rest of the clones were sat atop a building, waiting for the day for when a cure might be found, if they were truly still alive. Thailog remains there to this day.
According to Greg Weisman's Master Plan, Thailog would have survived the fire at Coney Island, but how he survived or what he would do afterwards has not been revealed.
Thailog has all the powers and abilities of a gargoyle, and in particular, Goliath. He has his strength, speed, ability to fly, etc. He does possess odd hair and skin pigmentation, his hair is white, and his skin is a dusky black. His eyes glow red instead of white, like the traditional male gargoyle. He is also possessed of an uncanny business sense and extremely cunning, the result of Xanatos's subliminal implants. A weakness could be the fact that mentally he is still young, and not experienced in battle and some ways of the world.
