Whitbourne was hatched sometime in August 1960, in the bell tower of the old, abandoned St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in St. John's, Newfoundland. He had three rookery siblings, his rookery brothers Bonavista and Woodstock, and his rookery sister Carbonear. His parents, along with every other member of the clan besides the four hatchlings, had vanished, seemingly smashed by someone who had inexplicably decided to spare the four eggs. The four hatchlings spent the next three weeks completely alone and defenseless.
On August 22, 1960, two young men, Jason Doyle and Patrick O'Neil, broke into the bell tower. They were looking for a place to live, having both left home after dropping out of school. When they came upon the four hatchlings, who were almost dead from neglect, O'Neil ran off, but Jason Doyle stayed, and decided to care for them. He brought them to the local veterinarian. He wasn't available, but the vet's secretary, June Tibbo, who was shocked at the existence of the gargoyles, was, and she helped Jason take them to her house. Over the next few months, the two nursed the four hatchlings back to health, and it became obvious that June had had come into contact with gargoyles before.
Once Whitbourne had been cared for, Jason named him after the town he had lived in before running off to St. John's- Whitbourne, Newfoundland. He decided to fix up the bell tower, and in 1961, he and the four baby gargoyles moved into it, and he raised them there.
Over the next 24 years, Whitbourne was basically raised as a human, dressing in human clothes, and acting as a human would. He also acquired a Newfoundlander accent. He and his family had a very happy life. Of the four gargoyles, Whitbourne felt the closest to Jason Doyle, and he secretly saw Jason as the only father figure he ever really had. As they grew up, they were taught by Jason about life. Even though he was very fond of drinking and parties, Jason taught Whitbourne and the others to be good, decent people. Still, like his rookery siblings, Whitbourne, too, grew up to enjoy partying and drinking.
On August 14, 1985, disaster struck. Jason lost his job at a local fish processing plant. To make him feel better, Jason's friends held a party to cheer him up. Unfortunately, he drank too much, and he insisted on driving home himself. Whitbourne, then 24 human years (12 gargoyle years) old, offered to take him home. When that tactic failed, he began trying to keep him from driving. Eventually, however, Whitbourne gave in. Jason Doyle died that night as he drove home, slamming head-on into a transfer truck. For months afterward, Whitbourne blamed himself for Jason's death, and he withdrew from his friends and family. Finally, with the help of Carbonear, Bonavista and Woodstock, he came to terms with Jason's death, and finally accepted it. Despite this, he missed Jason for years afterward.
For a short time, Whitbourne was romantically involved with Carbonear, but it ended up not working out and they went their separate ways. He later tried to pick up a girl he met at a local mall, but as expected, that didn't get very far either.
In 1992, Bonavista discovered a book about gargoyles in a library, and Whitbourne became aware of the heritage he had never known. Whitbourne wasn't particularly troubled by the book, but it did raise some questions on his reason for being, and made him wonder if "Clan Newfie" was the only gargoyle clan out there.
Whitbourne's question was answered on November 3, 1996. A week before that, a mysterious 'disease' had appeared in New York City. It was called the Richmond Syndrome. On that day, November 3, while playing a practical joke, Whitbourne and his rookery siblings met six other gargoyles- Brooklyn, Broadway, Lexington, Angela, Ophelia and Hawthorne- who had come to St. John's while on a search for a piece of the artifact known as Oberon's Ring. They explained that the 'disease' was actually a magical curse that "subverted" people, bringing out the darkest parts of their nature and transforming them into beings known as the Servants of Twilight. The Servants were followers of an entity known as the Forbidding, who was using an embittered fay known as Silhouette as his pawn. Not knowing what to make of the other gargoyles' story, they decided to take it in stride, and, on a lark, decided to help them on their search for the ring piece. However, Whitbourne and Woodstock became forcibly involved when they were pressured by one of the subverted, Brendan, to help destroy the six gargoyles. He and Woodstock agreed to help Brendan, but he repented, and was later a vital part of the plan to save the six gargoyles' lives. However, during the affair, Woodstock and Bonavista were subverted. In escaping, Lexington magically transported Carbonear and Whitbourne along with them to Atlanta, Georgia to locate the next ring fragment.
While they were in Atlanta, Whitbourne saved Brooklyn's life from an attack by one of the subverted. Whitbourne and Carbonear stayed behind in Atlanta while Brooklyn and the rest went on. They became entangled once again in the crisis when Ariel, a fay who was helping the gargoyles in their quest, brought the two Newfoundlanders to New York City to help in the final battle with the Forbidding and his forces. Whitbourne helped out, but was stunned by Woodstock's death at the hands of an out-of-control Broadway. Once the battle was over, he, Carbonear and Bonavista, who had been brought to Manhattan as one of the subverted, decided to stay in New York City and and join the Manhattan Clan.
Over the next year, Whitbourne and Bonavista became involved with Delilah, a clone of both Elisa Maza and Demona. The two, as well as Delilah's fellow clone Malibu, a clone of Brooklyn, fought over her. However, as this competition nearly reached its height, Whitbourne, Bonavista, Delilah, Malibu, and Brentwood, a clone of Lexington, were kidnapped by Bras d'Or, a secret Canadian government agency interested in gargoyle cloning. To that end, they had hired the help of Dr. Anton Sevarius. While in their hold, Whitbourne learned that he was related to Brooklyn. Brooklyn's parents had been kidnapped by Vikings in the tenth century, and taken to Newfoundland in order to protect Viking settlements. They had had more children, and eventually, their line continued to Whitbourne, who was their most recent descendant. Thus, Whitbourne was Brooklyn's great-nephew, many times removed. Whitbourne developed a plan, and rescued Delilah, which lead to Whitbourne and company's escape from Bras d'Or. After that incident, he and Delilah became romantically involved, much more seriously than he and Carbonear had been.
On Halloween 1997, Whitbourne played a series of practical jokes along with Delilah. In one of these pranks, he made the mistake of vandalizing Demona's mansion. This led to Demona's angry pursuit of Whitbourne. When Whitbourne was too tired to run any further, Demona caught up with him, and decided that Whitbourne was a perverted gargoyle, irreversibly corrupted by human ways. As for Whitbourne, he realized that Demona scared him to death. He was rescued by Goliath and Elisa, whom Delilah had gone to get when the chase began, but this incident led to a conviction in his mind that he was a coward.
This conviction came to a head when Demona attempted to cast a spell to destroy humanity in late November. He managed to overcome his fear of Demona, and helped stop her. After that incident, he accepted the fact that he wasn't as fearless as the rest of his clan, and he decided to live with it.
Shortly thereafter, Delilah moved into Castle Wyvern to live with Whitbourne. During the crisis with Regnum Dei, Whitbourne attempted to quit smoking for her. However, despite his best efforts, he eventually caved in and took it up again. He was disappointed in himself, but Delilah assured him that she herself wasn't disappointed in him, and that she loved him just the same.
There will doubtless be more adventures for Whitbourne in times to come, and exactly what the future holds for him remains to be seen.
Whitbourne has all the abilities and traits normally possessed by gargoyles, including claws, talons, wings that enable him to glide, eyes that glow when he is enraged, a prehensile tail, and strength significantly greater than that of the average human. He also turns into an organic stone-like substance during the day, and he heals at a faster rate while in this "stone sleep." However, he was not raised as a warrior, unlike most other gargoyles, and as a result, has a lack of fighting skills to supplement his abilities.
