Yama is the second-in-command of the gargoyle clan in Ishimura, Japan. His superior is the leader, Kai, and his mate is Sora. Yama is more anti-human than the rest of his clan, which is especially unusual considering the acceptance of his clan in their protectorate. He also is a strong follower of the ways of Bushido, the way of the warrior.
In 1996, Yama made an alliance with Taro, a former student of Kai's, who claimed to be creating an theme park about gargoyles to spread Bushido to the children of the world. To that end, Yama planned in secret with Taro to move the clan from Ishimura to the theme park. After this plan was begun, the Ishimuara clan met the Avalon travelers, Goliath, Elisa Maza, Angela, and Bronx. Yama was concerned it might alter their plans, but Taro simply said "The more, the merrier."
The three gargoyles, along with his clan and himself, were taken to the theme park based on gargoyles during the following day. Taro told Kai the same story he'd told Yama, but Kai eventually decided not to keep the clan there, despite Yama's protests. Taro responded by hitting Kai with a tranquilizer dart. Yama quickly discovered that he had been deceived, and that Taro planned to introduce the Ishimura clan to the world with a group of reporters. Yama followed the rules of Bushido, and engaged Taro in one-on-one combat. Despite his armor and electrically-charged weapon, Taro lost. Soon, Kai awoke, and the clan went back to Ishimura, where they still live to the present.
In Greg Weisman's Master Plan, Yama would have left Ishimura to atone for his crimes. He would have joined the team known as the Bad Guys, under the command of Robyn Canmore, and the mysterious Director.
Yama possesses all the normal abilities and traits of gargoyles, including wings that enable him to glide, claws, talons, a prehensile tail, and eyes that glow white when he is enraged, as well as strength far greater than that of the average human. During the day, he enters a regenerative "stone sleep," during which he turns into an organic stone-like substance and heals at a faster rate.
